Getting Drapery Height and Length Right

Few elements are as transformative as the right pair of drapes — but their impact depends heavily on how they're hung. One of the most common mistakes homeowners make is hanging drapes too low and too short.

Hang the Rod High

The single most impactful thing you can do with drapery is hang the rod higher than you think you should:

  • Hang the rod 4 to 6 inches above the window frame at minimum
  • For maximum effect, hang it just below the ceiling or crown molding, regardless of where the window actually ends

High-hung drapery draws the eye upward, making ceilings feel taller and windows feel larger.

Extend the Rod Wide

The rod should extend beyond the window frame on each side — typically 3 to 6 inches. When the drapes are open, they stack off the window entirely, allowing maximum light in and keeping the glass unobstructed.

Choosing the Right Length

Just above the floor (½ inch clearance): The most common and versatile choice. Clean, tailored, works in almost any room.

Puddle (3 to 6 inches of extra fabric): Romantic and luxurious. Best in formal rooms.

Floating (1 to 2 inches above the floor): A contemporary look that works well in casual spaces.

Sill length: Best for windows above radiators or kitchen windows where floor-length isn't practical.
